Obligatory first post

Well, I think everybody who has wrote the obligatory first post thinks that it's probably one of the most awkward and hardest.

So, I'll start out with introducing myself first. My name is Kate and I'm currently 18 years old living in New York. I'm a freshman in college and am a Chemistry major hoping to get into the Forensics field.

In my free time, I'm currently in a class that is training me to become an EMT-B; I take my state exam in March. I'm in the process of being sworn into my fire department's Medical Company next month.

In the summer until late fall, I play softball with this amazing group of people who are like family to me (one of them practically is). I'm hoping to get onto a soccer team next summer.

In the sporting world, I have been on a softball and basketball team in my 7th and 8th grades. I was going to do high school sports but found it too hard to juggle with how far away I lived, not having a late bus, and the amount of homework I had; I didn't want to inconvenience my parents. I was then going to try out for the softball team once I had my chance in my junior year, I think, but at that time, I had surgery on my left wrist for a torn cartilage. I was allowed back into all sports/gym the day after try-outs. After that, I didn't even bother because senior year wouldn't get me a scholarship.

So, I play softball for a local team and my position is catcher. I'll admit, I struggle with hitting now, but the team is an awesome inspiration and influence to make me do better. And I can definitely see an improvement. Hey, we DID win first place and the championships this year.

I also have dabbled in volleyball in the summer of my elementary school grades, and bowling. In gym class (haha, yes), I excelled at European handball. I've also played tennis for roughly about two years. I've skied a total of two times (once with an expert who showed me how to ski) and enjoyed it greatly. I have also snowboarded a few times in elementary school on a small hill near the public high school. However, I tried it on a real mountain and spent more time on my butt than on the actual board (that was WITH lessons). I think I'll stick to skiing until I find a better instructor, for now.

I love the Olympics and watch it constantly when it's on. Hell, I watch a lot of sports when I get the chance, like football.

In my other meager free time, I love to read and sometimes write.

Well, now to the part why I wanted to start this blog. First, let's put here I'm 205 pounds (who doesn't look it. I'll upload photos in a minute) and have already lost 20 pounds. I do not like the way I look and plan to change it, and have been changing it. Second, I've known about team handball since I was a kid. I didn't think, though, that it was so big in Europe. To be honest, I forgot about it until a few years ago.

Since then, I've followed Norway's women's handball team and fell in love with the sport more than ever. While I do want to get onto a team or a club somewhere near me, there really isn't any near me (except in upstate New York). I did, however, find some place in New Jersey. It'll be a drive but it'll be worth it. First, though, I want to lose more weight so I won't get laughed out of the league.

My ultimate goal, however, is to get onto the USA women's handball team. The thing that kicked started me into going this far was the e-mail I got a few days ago telling me try-outs were in mid-January in New York at West Point. Figures. I am no where near ready nor have the experience. C'mon, you know people who have experience with team handball are the ones more likely to not be cut from the team. And I have none.

Despite all this, I realize I have time. Looking at the small biographies of the players on the team, some of them are born in the late 1970's.

I realize my ultimate goal may not come true. Hell, it's rare if somebody gets that big. But my realistic goal is to lose enough weight so that I'm comfortable with myself and to get onto a club handball team.

This blog isn't for others to see unless they stumble across it. It's for me to maintain so I have motivation reminding me every day to change myself, like a lifestyle change. I need something to push me along. So, this was my idea. If people see this, great.

Well, I think this was a long first post. I can't promise the others won't be as long as this.

Oh, by the way, Happy Holidays! =]

Edited: Here's a photo of how I look now. It's a festive photo. Sadly, I can't find any photos recently without a sweatshirt on considering it is late December. Maybe I can do better next time.
